Scholarship Pageant, Focusing not just on Beauty but on Empowerment of Black Women

Washington, DC – In an historical crowning ceremony before family and friends, Kennetra Searcy of Nashville, Tennessee was crowned the first ever Ms. Black USA 2017.  The historical event took place at the Mayflower Hotel, where the Miss Black USA Organization held its inaugural pageant in 1987.  Kennetra was crowned by Dawn Moss, former Miss Black USA 1996 who is celebrating her 20 year anniversary as Miss Black USA.  Kennetra is the new face of Ms. Black USA, a newly established division of the Miss Black USA Organization for women ages 27 to 35.  Kennetra bested 120 applicants in the nationwide search.

Kennetra is a 27 year old certified personal trainer, fitness enthusiast, emerging business woman, wife and mother.  At an early age, she was a track and field rockstar.  She continued to excel as a high-school student athlete, which afforded her the opportunity to be granted a full scholarship to attend college. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kennetra obtained her Master’s degree from Canisius College in New York, and utilized this achievement as a catalyst to further power her passion–help others to live a healthier lifestyle.

Kennetra resides in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband, a professional football player and their 2 year old daughter.  She is the ultimate role model and a modern day She-ro!

Kennetra truly lives by the mantra, “that if I can help someone as I pass along; if I can cheer someone with a word or song; if I can show someone that he or she is traveling wrong, then my living shall not be in vain.”

As Ms. Black USA 2017, Kennetra will spend her reign advocating on behalf of causes such as The Heart Truth, the national platform of Miss Black USA Organization to raise awareness of heart disease, the #1 killer of women and serve as a Goodwill Ambassador to the Republic of Sierra Leone.
